Evans Lucky Three

3:39 pm - This was my first caches in Connecticut.

There were three of us, one of us was named Evans, and we were feeling lucky, so we headed for this cache on the way home.

There was some snow on the ground, but not enough to make the walk difficult. It was quite pleasant actually.

Anne's mom found the first stage. The second took us a while because we were looking for it to be actually hidden! It was really just lying there.

The final cache's only difficulty was getting good coordinate readings. TNLNSL. We took the loop back for a nice hike. Thanks!

Greetings from California #1

Alright, one more stab at the coordinates. This should put people on the right side of the street (NW corner of the intersection) and the cache is completely accessible in snow.

Greetings from California #1

I visited the site again today and confirmed the cache was still in place. I tried taking coordinates from a couple different approaches and got different coordinates. I think the buildings are blocking the signal too much. Try these new averaged coordinates. I also upped the difficulty to 3.

I Love L.A. (Now That I've Moved Out)

11:24 am - I concur - I like L.A. a lot more since I moved away.

I found this "Hollywood Tans" place in a strip mall in Manchester, New Hampshire. I was thankful for an excuse to get out of christmas eve shopping traffic.

There was also a Hollywood video in the same parking lot, but that was too easy. Thanks.

11 am - Checked on the cache and dropped off the RedSoxNation TB. Go Sox!

Cooper Duper

10:34 am - This one was "on the way home" from Rancho San Antonio as they say. Really it was!

As soon as I started searching some tennis players finished their match and slowly wandered back to their cars. I milled about until a tree was between us and set about searching.

I was about out of places to search when I saw something and checked it just in case. I was surprised to find the cache. Nice camo. I took a cool new workerofwood signature item. Thanks for the cache!

Terrain Challenge 2

9:16 am - We were in the neighborhood for the lego caches and we had some time so we decided if we couldn't clear this one off our lists.

I had consulted the aerial maps and I thought I knew the intended approach for this one, but as we decided to give a more direct approach a try. I noticed a trail that was interesting and we doubled back and took it. I nearly killed myself because things were icy and slippery in the valley this morning. As we rose it got considerably warmer. It also helped that we broke a good sweat chugging up the short but steep hill.

We were happy to see the cache still securely fastened and dry. We admired the view for a bit and headed back down. Thanks for the challenge!

Let's go LEGO #2

8:45 am - This was my "cover cache" for my 2K, juuust in case someone decided to delete one of my finds.

We had a nice walk in this familiar park. The ground was completely frozen in spots and some puddles had turned to ice. I didn't know it gets that cold here!

My coordinates led me off a bit, but there were few places to look and I had two people with me who had already found it which helped. Nice collection of legos you got there. TNLNSL. Thanks!

Let's go LEGO #1

8:11 am - 2K!!!!

My goal was to reach 2K by the end of the year and I was a week early. It was great to have MotorBug, Nostrada, and Workerofwood there to celebrate with me. WeBeDnD was there in spirit as I found their very inventive cache.

The guys let me "find" the cache and Nostrada helped me put things together as the others snickered. Maybe I should have done this alone. :) Soon everything came together, and I signed the log to make it official.

Then WoW presented me with a very unexpected gift - my own set of special sognature items. The rest of them immediately started begging for one after which we headed out on our hike for lego 2.

Thanks for all the caches, friendship and fun everyone. Now it's time to rest for a while (after just a few more caches of course!)

Long Distance Call

Called at 10:27 and after several rings someone answered hello and then I got some beeps and couldn't hear them anymore.

Called back at 10:29 and Jamie Z answered. Got the coords for whenever I make it up to SF again. Thanks!

The Lord of the Ring

8:58 am - This one took me a while to spot. Cool device. Even once I saw one end, it took me a while to trace it to the other.

The log was a challenge to get out and I got kinda sappy, but it's a cool idea. Thanks!

Festivus

9:09 am - I tried 4 different approached to this one. The fourth put me a ways away, but in a familiar spot which appeared to be off private property, so I went for it.

I'm not sure what really convinced me that I had taken the wrong approach. Maybe it was the deer trails I had to follow. Or maybe it was the stream crossing. Perhaps the barbed wire or maybe the poison oak field. Hmm, this paved road looks like it would have been a LOT easier. It did mean I had some more grievances to air and it the journey required several feats of strength! I don't think I tresspassed at any point though.

I found the cache after a few minutes of searching and then took the easy way back for a longer walk. On the way out I noticed that the correct route was near the first approach I tried. Oh well. Thanks for the cache and happy festivus.

The Lost Telegram

8:19 am - This was quite an elborate puzzle. I wish my puzzle solving skills were able to match it! I was just searching for the wrong stuff I guess. In any case I got some help and found the solution once I made things less complicated.

I went out to the site today and as promised, got a bit muddy. One of the ears didn't want to turn and I was afraid to break it, but I guess it was OK. I was impressed at the initials on the side. It looks like it's been there for a long time. I'm glad it survived the freeway construction.

Thanks for the quality cache!

Cupertino Library v3.0

7:55 am - It was bitterly cold our here on this foggy morning, so I tried to make this one quick. I had some trouble with the artist's name because I think you meant last name, not all the letters in her name.

That was easy to resolve though and I found the cache easily. Nice library. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Travertine Springs Trail

3:02 pm - We reached this trail junction and skipped the cache for now. Nostrada's wife and mine stayed while I ran back up the Toll Road Trail to find Nostrada where I had left him after our fiasco trying to take a shortcut to Cat's Locker.

The quarter-mile went quickly and I was relieved to see that he stayed put. We headed back downhill to join the ladies and find the cache.

We looked here and there until I finally spotted it. It looked as if it had gotten wet but it was bone dry inside. TNLNSL. Whew. Now it was just a matter of a half-mile hike to the car before we could call it a day. Thanks!

Posted by jeff at 03:02 PM

Travertine Troll

2:40 pm - After our fiasco at Cat's Locker, we headed down the trail to what appeared to be a junction. Looking at the map, I thought this must be were the Travertine Trail meets the Toll Road Trail.

Nostrada agreed to take my pack and stay put while I ran down to get the wives.

I headed down the "Travertine Trail" and found that it sure was poorly maintained. Downed trees everywhere, and hardly a semblance of a trail. Soon it disappeared completely and I realized that it couldn't be the trail. I bushwacked south a bit and found the trail.

I ran most of the .16 miles and found the ladies chatting away. We gathered our things and headed back up the trail to Travertine Springs. On the way we passed this one and I found it quickly, passing it over to Nostrada's better half as well. TNLNSL.

Now we just had to get to the real junction and rescue Nostrada...

Posted by jeff at 02:40 PM

Cat's Locker

2:17 pm - Well our hike was going pretty well until this cache. I knew it had to be on the upper trail which we would junction with soon, but it was due north of us and we came across this gentle sloping grassy hill. Why not climb the hill and go straight for the cache?

Well the hill was steep and tiring, but we made it up with minimal bushwhacking. Unfortunately we were still 400 feet away - down into a ravine and beyond. We slipped down a slippery slope and crossed a dry creek, following deer trails most of the time. At the creek the terrain went up again and this time it was a lot less clear of brush. It was so close though, so we pushed on.

When we were less than 150 feet away, all clearing went away and we were crawling up between bushes, clamoring up to the trail. Finally we made it, dirty and tired. The cache was thankfully very easy. TNLNSL.

Now we just had to get back down to the travertine trail where we left our wives and there was no way in hell we were going back the way we came. We headed west along the trail to the junction...

Travertine Tower View

1:36 pm - I dismissed one approach, only to reconsider it a few minutes later and then completely rule it out (big cliff). It was easy once we got close. TNLNSL. Thanks for all the caches on this route!
Posted by jeff at 01:36 PM

Saratoga Gap Trail

12:55 pm - We took a side trip off the route to go up here and grab this one. It was an easy find on the uphill slope. TNLNSL. We went up to the gate and then realized we needed to turn around to get to our car which we had parked off of Highway 9 for our one-way trip through Castle Rock. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 12:55 PM

Travertine Terminus

12:43 pm - We made a quick stop at the terminus before heading up the Gap Trail to grab another cache. It wasn't long before we realized that we had to backtrack and start our Travertine trip from the Terminus. TNLNSL. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 12:43 PM

Jen and Charlie's Flies cache

12:35 pm - We started off by looking in completely the wrong place. After a change of batteries, I headed off to where the signal took me, back to a spot we had passed. The cache was in a logical place. TNLNSL. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 12:35 PM

Fisherwoman's Favorite Potty Break

12:10 pm - Well, this was useful. Anne found the cache and Nostrada took the Nemo TB, which he annoyed us with for the rest of the day by making it laugh. We weren't laughing after the 20th time. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 12:10 PM

Yes, Up There! Really!!

11:12 am - I returned to this one with confirmation on the actual location and backup. Nostrada and I pushed Anne up partway and she found the cache.

Why is there a number on the lid of this one? I thought that was only for the Pole Position caches?

Posted by jeff at 11:12 AM

Meet at the Crossroads.

10:12 am - This was a good spot to meet nostrada and we got a cache too. The hot dog guy was blasting Christmas music which seemed strange since I don't associate Christmas with hot dogs.

We found it without any problems and I took the winini sig item, which I hadn't seen before. Thanks!

Walk Like a Duck

8:55 am - I took the shortcut to this one over the fence. The way back was a bit tougher. I found it quickly. I don't know how you did this and I don't think I really want to know. Evil stuff. I appreciate your mercy in placing it here. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Odd Nuts

8:37 am - I missed this one on my first lap, but spotted it on the second. Maybe it's because I didn't think these grew on trees! It was a big tough to get apart, but I did it.

I did give a wave, but I'm not quite sure which direction I was waving in. Thanks!

JESTER

6:32 pm - I had some incorrect theories about how this one worked, so it took me a while to get it right. A new tool that was pointed out to me helped once I figured out how to use it.

The hint in the plaintext had me thinking I would have to order something! When I got there I realized it was a different kind.

There's a funny thing going on in the log book for this one. MotorBug apparently thought it was October and dated his log 10-12-2004. Then atc and mmp went along with it, dating them in October too. I scratched my head for a bit and decided it really was December.

Thanks for the cache!

Free WiFi #4

6:09 pm - Quick find this evening. I may have looked odd to passersby as I searched in an obviously empty place.

Afterwards I just couldn't resist checking out the cool phones at the Sprint Store. Thanks for the fun.

Top Omelet

5:46 pm - The anagram was easy for this one - the hard part was finding the cache. After searching for some time in the dark, I broke down and called a lifeline. I was very close when searching, but just didn't notice the tricky hide. I'd bump that one up a star. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 05:46 PM

Slackers

5:12 pm - Once I had an idea of the theme here, I sent the cache off to a friend with a PhD in this kind of stuff. He wasn't quite sure, but came up with some reasonable coordinates that turned out to be right on.

I'm not sure what I was seaching on, and I'm not sure I want to know. I'll still be able to produce children, right? TFTC.

The Sound of Silence

4:51 pm - I did a full lap and a half around the block until I saw where I needed to park - where everyone else was parked, of course! I was running out of daylight, so I made double-time to the cache and found it quickly. Well done. Thanks for the cache.

End of the Trail 3: Palo Alto Baylands

8:42 am - I parked far, far away from this one. There were two other options that would have put me closer, but it was a nice walk. It was just me and a gaggle of senior citizens on the trail this morning. I didn't know this particular section was here, though I can see why it's not very popular - it doesn't go anywhere!

Easy find for the cache though - thanks!

2:01 pm - This is a very cool idea. Thanks, guys! As someone who's been stopped by the local authorities while geocaching, it's good to see some officers becoming aware of the sport and even supporting it.

I spotted the cache from a bit away. It took a bit of rearranging to get the cache in and out. TNLNSL. I dare someone to muggle this one! Thanks.

1:40 pm - Spent 20 minutes or so looking where I thought it would be even though my GPSr was putting me in the middle of the grass. I guessed at the camo, but found nothing. Some other time, perhaps.

Varney Air

1:12 pm - I arrived and started to look, then two kids jumped right in front of me and started crawling all over the place. I waited for a bit, then decided to go inside. It's really neat what they've done inside the place.

Outside again, I had a seat and waited until the kids left. When the coast was clear I started my search but a minute later one kid reappeared and started talking to me.

He first told me that the helicopter wasn't his, but he thought it belonged to the Army and it was from World War I or II. Realizing I wasn't going to get any searching done, I headed off for another cache.

I returned a half-hour later and the kid was still there! I waited a few minutes and he disappeared again. In the meantime I read the logs and realized I was probably trying to look in the wrong place.

Sure enough I found the other spot where my GPSr wanted me while another family showed up. I dropped my GPSr, which was convenient since I now had an excuse to drop to my knees and look for the cache. Spotted it. Finally signed the thing and took off. Thanks for the cache.

Alum Rock Puzzle Cache

3:24 pm - The first part of this puzzle was pretty easy. The second part I needed some help with, mostly because stupid mistakes were making me miss the simplest solution. We happened to be in the park today, so we did this one on the way out.

I found it after a few minutes of searching, but pretty much accidentally. It's a pretty small cache for being in the middle of the woods. I was surprised to be STF although I know of at least one other cacher who has solved but not claimed it.

Thanks!

Posted by jeff at 03:24 PM

Railway Bridge

3:06 pm - We attempted this one on the way up the trail and then again on the way back. I thought I picked up a hint in the description, but that didn't seem to pan out.

I'd feel better if you added a hint or one more star of difficulty. :D

Inspiration Point Hitching Post

2:40 pm - I was trying to find this one using information from the description and it wasn't making much sense. Fence? The fence is pretty far from here. And I thought this was a micro?

It wasn't until I realized I was looking at another cache description by Marky that starts with Inspiration Point that my confusion went away. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Woodland Trail

2:30 pm - This was a nice little trail. We we went the wrong way at first and had to double back. Near the cache were three deer just laying in the woods. Their camo is excellent - we almost didn't notice them. I found the cache without much difficulty and TNLNSL. Thanks.

1:58 pm - Rule #13 of Geocaching in the Bay Area: read the logs first. I made the same mistake as everyone else. I looked close to right place first, then went to where I thought the hint indicated. When I read the logs I understood where it had to be and found it quickly. TNLNSL. Thanks.

11:59 am - We walked to this one from outside the gate. Easy find. TNLNSL. Next we were heading further into the park. I was dissapointed to find that my Santa Clara County Parks Venture Pass didn't cover me here since it was a Municpial park. Oh well, I'm $6 poorer.

Licau II

10:30 am - I had an hour and a half to do a cache in the Fremont area and this one fit the bill perfectly. I made a brisk walk of the first stage and then headed over to the second and third. The third was was tougest as the mud was thick and sticky. At several points I had built up "mud shoeshoes" as a I slogged along.

I got all the info from these familiar spots, then headed back to the car and the cache. I didn't have much time left though, so I only made a cursory look under the eye of a security guard and without the description in hand. I hope to get back soon and nab the cache.

8:38 am - It was a foggy but pleasant morning for a walk. There was quite a bit of mud though, the kind that gets stuck on your shoes and builds up.

With some luck, I found the cache in the first place I looked. TNLNSL. Thanks!

8:07 pm - Rule #5 of Geocaching in the Bay Area - always check your math.

I'm notoriously bad a counting. For minute I thought I'd ignore my #5 rule and just go for the cache. My better judgement prevailed and I checked my counting, which of course was off in the most significant digit. I found the cache OK, very close to where another cache used to be. Thanks!

Pupperoni Cache

7:46 pm - It was a nice night to drive through the neighborhood and look at the Christmas lights. I think this was about the 6th time I've been in this park looking for a cache.

I was half-expecting a mountain lion to jump out and make a good dinner out of me, but none appeared. I found the cache quickly, even in the dark. TNLNSL.

So if this park closes at dusk, why do they have lights in the park anyway? Thanks.

8:28 am - Man, it took me 29 years to get a cache named after me, and this kid gets one in days! Congrats D&D.

It was a quick find. I was happy to see that the RedSoxNation TB was still here and I took that to bring it back east for a victory lap in a few weeks. Thanks!

State of Confusion

8:57 am - Initially I was confused because I solved the puzzle a little too quickly - this couldn't be 4 star puzzle.

I headed out to the coordinates and found myself in a cul-de-sac which didn't match the description. Uh oh, time to call a lifeline. Apparently I had made the same mistake some others had made which I should have relalized when checking the distance from the posted coords. Oh well. Nice hide. Off to work I go now.

Forgotten Psychedelic Rock Venue #1THE BOLD KNIGHT

7:26 pm - I really had no intention of doing any caching tonight, but I was passing right by here and remembered I saw there was a new cache here. I parked in back and then started to look up the coordinates on my phone.

Soon I looked up and saw someone wandering around the parking lot. That shadow looks familiar... it's batcher! I've run into this guy on five random occasions now and I can now recognize him by his silhouette.

We chatted for a bit and then headed over to the cache for a quick find. I think this place was still called tThe Bold Knight until very recently when they renamed it the Barcelona. I'll be interested to see how many dozens of Forgotten Psychedelic Rock Venues there are!

8:34 am - I heard about the original container for this one, so I had a good chuckle when I saw the new "non-threatening" version. :-)

No tots on the lot today, so I was able to search without incident. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Whisman Whimsey

8:28 am - Yup, that was an easy one. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate

8:21 am - mmp challenged me to find this one without solving the puzzle. I took a guess and was about 4 miles off, so I decided to solve the puzzle.

Actually, that's not true. I looked around and found the oldest engineer in sight and he solved the puzzle with me. I'm happy to be young enough to have never had to deal with these things. Then again, some of the monstrous software we have these days wouldn't exist if we still used them.

Anyway, it was a relatively easy find on this wet morning. Thanks for the education.

I'll Surf No More

9:03 am - Ahh, God's Machine. I always cheer when I drive by here on 237. I've bought 2 of these so far and 2 more as gifts this year. Quick find as the good folks reported for work. Thanks!

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

8:50 am - I had a little trouble finding this one, but finally decided to look in some places that weren't initially visible. I nearly had the whole park to myself this morning. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Ulistac Nature Preserve

8:44 am - This made for nice morning walk. Easy find too. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Ultimate Battleship: J2

2:09 pm - As we approached the cache, we saw two geotrails, the one where we found the cache and the one for Magellan users. :-) The cache was uncanny. TNLNSL. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 02:09 PM

Ultimate Battleship: J1

2:06 pm - MotorBug spotted this one just before I did. Quick grab. Thanks for the cache.

Ultimate Battleship: Treasure Ship From The Past

1:46 pm - Due to some bad recon intelligence, we were forced to walk through a contaminated area and failed our mission. We doubled back and instead entered the area in our armored vehicles. Ensign workerofwood has been demoted to private. Took nothing, left Pokey M+M TB.

Ultimate Battleship: Latrine with a View

1:27 pm - We were relieved to have found this one. What's with the hockey player picture? Hopefully his name isn't LaTrine. TNLNSL, flushed. Thanks.

Ultimate Battleship: Guard on Duty

1:21 pm - The guard must have been slacking as we went undetected. Thanks for the cache.
Posted by jeff at 01:21 PM

Ultimate Battleship: Up Periscope

1:19 pm - Neat container! I made the quick grab and we were off to collect more golf balls and maybe a few caches. Thanks.

Miracle Mountain

1:13 pm - Ha, should have been called Assume Nothing 6 5/8 or something like that. Tried to fit a travel bug in, but it was too big, so TNLNSL. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 01:13 PM

Miracle Gate

12:45 pm - The miracle was that my car made it up this steep, narrow and crumbling road. I spotted the "camo" right away with the owner looking on. Thanks.

Ultimate Battleship: Weapons Depot

12:25 pm - Ah, so very appropriate. I prefer to fight with my bare hands, so I TNLNSL. Thanks.

Ultimate Battleship: Shrinking Battlefield

12:16 pm - We searched for a bit, but couldn't find it until Workerofwood showed up and MotorBug found it in a place that Nostrada had already looked. I had to explain to the troops how the experiments were produced. TNLNSL. Thanks.

Ultimate Battleship: Ghost Ship #2

11:54 am - Ich habe Angst vor Geistern, waren aber keine da! - I guess.
Posted by jeff at 11:54 AM

Vista Trailhead

11:14 am - Some muggle deer were guarding the cache. Nice camo, even if it didn't fool MotorBug. Thanks!
Posted by jeff at 11:14 AM

Safe Haven

10:38 am - Amusing hide. Took us a while to find. That tree looked like a safe place to hide, but I guess that wasn't it. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 10:38 AM

Ultimate Battleship: Battleship in the Ivy

10:18 am - MotorBug found this one in short order even if Nostrada didn't realize it and kept searching. TNLNSL. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 10:18 AM

Ultimate Battleship: H9

10:04 am - I was too chicken to park there, so we had to take a "long" walk across the street. Quick find. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 10:04 AM

Ultimate Battleship: H5

9:58 am - Officer MotorBug pulled rank on us and said he had "paperwork" to do. He stationed himself in the attack vehicle while the enlisted men went out in search of the target. It was an easy find and we went in search of other battlefields. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 09:58 AM

Ultimate Battleship: WW2

9:48 am - This was one of those puzzles where as soon as you ask someone for help, it immediately makes sense. It was right on theme.

At the location one of our boys was standing guard over the cache though I nearly mistook him for the enemy. No friendly fire was encountered though and Nostrada was able to find the target without alerting the civilians. Thanks for another successful mission.

Posted by jeff at 09:48 AM

Ultimate Battleship: J15

9:35 am - Once again, the location was secured by enemy combattents. MotorBug distracted the enemy force while Nostrada and I acquired the target with use of given intelligence. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 09:35 AM

Ultimate Battleship: Depth Charge

9:24 am - Hmmm, me thinks you're way off target, captain. Time to recalibrate your sensors! Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 09:24 AM

Ultimate Battleship: Crow's Nest

9:20 am - We had a little jumping contest at this one here. I forfeited. Thanks.
Posted by jeff at 09:20 AM

Ultimate Battleship: H14

9:14 am - Target acquired. Nostrada's shouting things in German, huh? Who's side is he on, anyway?
Posted by jeff at 09:14 AM

Ultimate Battleship: WW1

9:01 am - Somehow I looked at this one and it made sense pretty quickly after reading a few logs. I didn't have the tool, so had to wire over to a distant correspondent for the code.

I was all confused at the cache site because I had corrected the wrong coordinates, but we knew were at the right place. Thanks for the good fight!

Ultimate Battleship: Fuel Depot

2:49 am - We couldn't find this one on our first try. We called the owner and he said it must be gone. How embarassing it was later when he checked on it and said it was there. He put it back in the right place though and we found it on the way back to the homestead. Thanks.
