Samsung ML-1740 Printer Drivers for Macs

12/2011 Update: I can confirm that the Splix drivers work great!

Dear GoogleBot, Yahoo! Slurp, MSNBot, Ask Jeeves/Teoma, etc.,

Yesterday I purchased a really cheap laser printer, the Samsung ML-1740. There were conflicting reports of whether or not the printer would work with my Mac. Apparently Samsung had a driver, but then pulled it. After a lot of searching, I finally found a link to the drivers which were not pulled from the Australian version of the Samsung website.

I’m replacing my Epson Stylus 777 printer (in iMac blue) which prints nice photos, but I don’t print photos often or realy print often at all. That was actually the problem. The ink cartridges would clog up and I’d always have to clean them before I could print anything legible. The printer was slow, noisy (it freaked out the cat) and produced soggy paper.

The new printer is quiet and prints pages quickly in one fast pass. Back in college I remember first using the $1,000 Apple Laserwriters and wishing I could have one of my very own. Now the same quality is available at less than $100. Amazing.

Anyway, please consider this blog for your index when people search for “Samsung ML-1740 Mac Drivers”. It would have really helped me out.

Sincerely,

Jeff Boulter

Update: It worked! I’m #2 on Yahoo. Still waiting for that “other” search engine to return some quality results though.

  1. Hi there,
I found your website via Google search, but noticed that the installer you had for download was quite old. I went to the Samsung Australia site, and it looks like they have newer drivers, that work well with OS X 10.4-10.5 (and not require restarting, either). I installed the one for 10.5 via the link at http://www.samsung.com/au/support/download/supportDown.do?group=printer%2C%20multifunction%20%26amp%3B%20fax&type=printer%2C%20multifunction%20%26amp%3B%20fax&subtype=mono%20laser%20printer&model_nm=ML-1740&disp_nm=ML-1740&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=DR&vType=L&prd_ia_cd=06010400 and after installation, plugged in the printer and it was recognized perfectly and printed without any issues whatsoever.

    Thanks for the post!

August 5th, 2008 at 8:12 am Hi Jeff
A year ago you posted a printer driver for a Samsung ML 1740 printer. I have a friend in a similar pickle. He has an older imac running OS 9.2 and is trying to get this printer to run on his machine. The imac runs a small CNC machine and he doesn’t want to upgrade the OS. My question is “is the driver you posted for OS 9 and in what preferance folder would I copy the driver into? Thanks

  3. Hello,

I came across this wonderful page while on google. I want to know if my Samsung 2010 printer is compatible with a MAC computer. Does anyone know? I’m tired of PC and am willing to try MAC for the first time.

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

  4. Hi there! I LOVE my Samsung ML-1740 and decided to try and use it on my Mac at home. What a disappointment when it wouldn;t print. A quick Google search turned up your site as the first link, and voila! I am back in business. You are a lifesaver, much appreciated!

  5. Hi there – I’m still having trouble getting my mac to print to the ML-1740 which is connected through a wireless print server. When I install the drivers that you have listed here, the only samsung drivers listed on my machine are for a ML-1630. Any suggestions? Email me directly at sirrix AT gmail DOT com

  6. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I just got my new macbook and was trying to set it up to work with the printer. If you could do everyone a favor though and just make the update a bit bigger because I didn’t see it at first and was trying to download the other version you mentioned. So a tip to everyone…

    ///////////////////////////////////
    DOWNLOAD THE NEW DRIVER

    http://www.samsung.com/download/FileView.aspx?cttfileid=196408&type=Printer&typecode=15&subtype=Laser+Printer&subtypecode=1501&model=ML-1740/TEC&filetype=DR&language=

download it and it works perfectly!

  7. I have an ML-1740 and an Intel MacBook running 10.5.5. Instructions here did not work, using Samsung drivers from this site. I could not get it to work following CUPS/FooMatic/Ghostscript instructions either. What finally did work was going here http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDown.do?group=&type=&subtype=&model_nm=ML-1740&disp_nm=ML-1740&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=DR&vType=L&prd_ia_cd=06010200 and downloading the v0.97 driver for 10.5

Finally the printer dialog worked, and printing a test page worked.

  8. Thanks so much!

I have used this ML-1740 printer for 3-4 years now and just downloaded the software onto a second Mac in April 2009 and had no problem finding the driver. Just bought a new Mac in June and no driver on the web site.

Thanks so much for researching and making the driver available.

This is a great printer. I finally changed the cartridge after 3-4 years of usage!

  9. I can also confirm that the driver (link at top of page) works with 10.6, after Rosetta is istalled. Note that Snow Leopard will prompt you to install Rosetta if necessary (i.e., you don’t have to worry about manually installing it before attempting to install the printer drivers).

  10. Mankoff’s link in Post 163 worked fine for Snow Leopard. The one at the top did not. Haven’t used this great little printer for years due to the alleged lack of Mac compatibility, so thanks!

  11. I can’t believe I wasted my time talking to Samsung help – which was no help – when this link was available.

Thank you SO much. I actually have two of these and lost the driver when my hard drive was replaced and then could not find the disks.

    Jim

  12. Thank YOU!!! I have an ibook G4 that i recently did a re-install of factory discs
(I thought it would help, it was running slow) I then did all the suggested updates from Apple. I then realized my samsung ML-1710 printer needed the drivers installed. I pulled out the samsung disc that contains the drivers and installed it, and installed it, and installed it!!! This would not work and the printer driver could not be found. I tried downloading some crap off the web when googled for the driver(I probably downloaded some virus) None of these worked!
    Until….you Jeff. Thank You again!
I was ready to hit Office Depot to buy a new printer.
The funny thing is the printer worked great until I did the re-install and the updates. And FYI I NEVER did any updates over the last 5 years even when prompted.
    Thanks again,
    James

  13. Jeff, I downloaded a file from your “copy of the drivers” link, and now my new imac makes and insanely loud scratching noise every time I touch the volume buttons, as well as when I try any audio from iTunes… Please help!!

  14. Just to confirm that the driver for Samsung ML-2010 is the best option. It works very well on OS X 10.6 (snow leopard), even if the Dell 1100 is connected remotely. It is easy to find on the US Samsung web site.

Even the picture of the Samsung printer looks exactly like the Dell printer…

  15. Thank you so much for sharing this information. I downloaded the driver from the Australian site today and it works with my new iMac. The Samsung ML-1740 is *such* a great printer and we’re so relieved we won’t have to replace it.

Note to Mark #187: You’ve probably figured this out by now but restarting the Mac after installing the driver is the key. Then go to your system preferences>print & fax and add the printer from there. (Your machine might even find the printer without your having to click the + (add printer) button.

  16. Hey Jeff,

I installed the SPL file and restarted my computer. Then I went to system preferences and tried to add a printer but it wouldn’t recognize the driver. It noticed that a printer was plugged in but it said I didnt have a driver. What do I do?

I have a MacBook running Snow Leopard.

  17. I followed directions to a tee and it still doesn’t work on my macbook pro.

It recognizes the printer, queues up the job immediately, tells me that each page is printing and then tells me it’s finished. But nothing prints. Anybody experience this problem?

I triple checked all connections. I’ve used this printer hundreds of times before. It still has to be a driver problem. So frustrating.

  18. Thanks for the link!

I just bought my first Mac, and am going through the process of getting it up and going. I’ve been a PC user all my life, so the setup process has been a little frustrating at times. Thank god for google! So I found a few different driver versions for ML-1740 for mac on the Samsung website, but after downloading the .sit files, and then goggling .sit to find out what that is and how to use it, only to find out I need to download the stuffit program to unpack the file, and then I run the install, restart and still when I go to add the printer…. still nothing.

Finally, I tried one last attempt at googling for a solution, and I found your blog. At last, a solution! Samsung really need to make it easier to download a simple driver for mac.

  19. @edward, I think I’m having the same problem. Additionally, if I don’t have the Samsung’s queue window already open, it won’t pop up automatically.
I hit print, open the queue (none pops up automatically), and see that the job is on hold. I resume the job and it says printing and the job disappears, but nothing actually prints.
I have a terrible feeling (memory?) that I will have to reset all printer settings. Anybody know if that’s right?
    I’m running 10.6.4.

  20. I downloaded Samsun installer from the Australian website, I ran it, it claimed everything was successful and restarted the computer. Before running it, I deleted the Samsung-folder from the Library folder. But when I try to add the printer, 1740 is not available. Is there something I’m not getting? I got it work once on my own Mac, now I can’t seem to do the same for my wife’s new mac. Help!

  21. Hi Jeff,

I know this blog is a few years old, I tried the new link provided this year and it looks like Samsung may have taken it down. Any fresh links or solutions that you know of? Just got this printer from a friend who moved away. Would love to get it working with my MacBook Air.
