Probably not."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We got a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0052QKMXC\/thescrabblera-20\">SodaStream soda maker<\/a> several months ago and while I&#8217;ve enjoyed using it, I&#8217;ve wondered about SodaStream&#8217;s claims that it saves you money.<\/p>\n<p>Does it? Probably not, or at least not for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s assume you buy soda in the most economical way, in 2-liter bottles. You&#8217;ll probably pay about $1.50\/2 liters. Assuming you buy CO2 refills at $15 and not $30 for a new CO2 bottle and you drink half a liter of soda a day, it will take you 2,376 days or 6.5 years to make back your investment in the SodaStream maker. Wow!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/download.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-710\" title=\"download\" src=\"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/download.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/download.png 410w, http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/download-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if you spent less than $1.33\/2 liter on soda before, you&#8217;ll <strong>never<\/strong> make your money back.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are other ways to decrease your cost per liter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.criticalpaintball.com\/SodaMod-p\/sodastream-sodamod.htm\">SodaMod<\/a>, which allows you to attach a paintball CO2 tank which is much more cheaply filled than what SodaStream charges. A similar product is the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.co2doctor.com\/usandcanada.htm\">FreedomOne-PBI<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Make your own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatingrules.com\/2011\/04\/the-sodastream-bar\/\">syrup<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Since Bed, Bath and Beyond sells SodaStream supplies, take advantage of all those coupons they send you and buy syrup and CO2 there.<\/li>\n<li>Buy one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B001KYT6CS\/thescrabblera-20\">cheaper SodaStream models<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>There are other reasons to buy a SodaStream, like reducing waste and&nbsp;not having to lug heavy bottles and cans of essentially&nbsp;water to your house, but economically, it&#8217;s not likely win.<\/div>\n<p>You can run your own calculations by <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AvHFsJOQxfWMdDNpaGlHb3o3NWJqRk4tSmhlUHJJYXc\">making a copy of the Google Spreadsheet I used<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We got a SodaStream soda maker several months ago and while I&#8217;ve enjoyed using it, I&#8217;ve wondered about SodaStream&#8217;s claims that it saves you money.
