My home page<\/a> was getting a bit stale, so I decided to “update” it. Unbelievably, it’s been nearly 20 years since my first web page, so I thought I would go retro with it, but using modern techniques.<\/p>\n

Here’s how I did it:<\/p>\n

ISINDEX<\/a> search<\/strong>
\nThis is just a form, using a Google Search restricted to boulter.com.<\/p>\n

Frames<\/strong>
\nNo FRAME tags here; it uses a div with CSS floats.<\/p>\n

Weblog and Twitter<\/strong>
\nSomething you used do with server-side includes can now be done with jQuery<\/a> and jQuery plugins.<\/p>\n

Visitor counter<\/strong>
\nInserted with JavaScript, the dial numbers use CSS gradients.<\/p>\n

Blinking text<\/strong>
\nUses JavaScript to periodically toggle element visibility<\/p>\n

Select box navigation<\/strong>
\nThis used to be done with a form submit and a server redirect. Today, it’s a trivial amount of JavaScript.<\/p>\n

Small caps<\/strong>
\nYou used to do this with lots of font tags. Today, you can use the CSS font-variant: small-caps<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Thick table borders<\/strong>
\nThere’s no tables in the page. The div uses the border-style: ridge<\/span> style.<\/p>\n

Bullets<\/strong>
\nFormerly accomplished with an inline image next to each item, CSS supports this with
\nlist-style-image: url(reddot.gif)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

You can see all the CSS in my web10.css<\/a> file.<\/p>\n
