{"id":440,"date":"2007-04-26T21:15:51","date_gmt":"2007-04-27T05:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/26\/tagging-is-reverse-search\/"},"modified":"2007-04-26T21:15:51","modified_gmt":"2007-04-27T05:15:51","slug":"tagging-is-reverse-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/26\/tagging-is-reverse-search\/","title":{"rendered":"Tagging is Reverse Search"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something occurred to me today about tagging &#8211; it&#8217;s search in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>When you search, you put in keywords (tags) to find a web page.<br \/>\nWhen you tag, you take a web page you&#8217;ve already found, and save some tags (keywords) for it.<\/p>\n<p>This immediately justifies the value of something like <a href=\"http:\/\/delicious.com\">del.icio.us<\/a> &#8211; millions of pages that humans have meticulously tagged with the exact keywords people want to use when people want to find them. That&#8217;s an awesome resource when you&#8217;re trying to build a better search engine.<\/p>\n<p>However, I still think that tagging is stupid for anything that&#8217;s text-based. We already have the technology to derive keywords (tags) from textual web pages. <\/p>\n<p>For photos and videos and things you don&#8217;t natively have ways to search with words, tagging makes sense &#8211; at least for lazy people who don&#8217;t like to write full captions. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something occurred to me today about tagging &#8211; it&#8217;s search in reverse.
