{"id":176,"date":"2004-08-19T18:42:22","date_gmt":"2004-08-20T01:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/2004\/08\/19\/performant-is-not-a-word\/"},"modified":"2004-08-19T18:42:22","modified_gmt":"2004-08-20T01:42:22","slug":"performant-is-not-a-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/boulter.com\/blog\/2004\/08\/19\/performant-is-not-a-word\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Performant&#8221; is not a word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well actually it is, but it&#8217;s not what you think, even though it should be. <\/p>\n<p>At one point I thought I invented the word &#8216;performant&#8217; as a term to mean &#8220;performs acceptably&#8221; or &#8220;it&#8217;s really fast!!&#8221; kinda like &#8216;compliant&#8217;. But then I noticed other people I didn&#8217;t know were using it too. <\/p>\n<p>The only problem is that it&#8217;s not a word. One dictionary defines it as &#8220;a performer&#8221; like in a play. That&#8217;s clearly not what we mean, but it makes sense. There&#8217;s even a company with <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.performantsystems.com\/\">Performant<\/A> in their name, though they don&#8217;t seem to have anything to do with high performance.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s a renegade linguist to do? Just keep on using performant. Eventually the dictionaries will catch on. Hey, if <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2001\/WORLD\/europe\/06\/14\/english.newwords\/\">Doh<\/A> can make it, surely performant should have a place.<\/p>\n<p>In related news, <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/culture\/0,1284,64596,00.html\">Wired has finally decided to stop capitalizing &#8216;internet&#8217;<\/A>. Did you hear that, <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/coc\/journalism\/SOURCE\/journal_links\/AP_style.html\">AP<\/A>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well actually it is, but it&#8217;s not what you think, even though it should be.
