I dropped by before work this morning. It was a beautiful morning for a bike ride. I found it quickly after doing a little CITO. Although I've found others of the same general style, this is the first example of this particular type that I've found. I think it works nicely. There was no stash note, so I left a waterproof one. Angular Reasoning

By: The Rat Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

Friday evening's search was more than 100 feet from the cache, since I used a tool with insufficient precision. Monday evening's search was more than 100 feet from the cache in the other direction, since I used a tool with insufficient accuracy. I had coordinates confirmed by GeoChecker for yesterday evening's search, but came about 100 cm short of the cache. I just read too much into the cache description and limited my search area too much. This morning, I rode my bike over here before work. Encouraged by email from The Rat, I touched nothing until I saw something that could camouflage a large micro container. (Some might even call it a small container.) Angular Reasoning

By: The Rat Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

I finally have coordinates confirmed by GeoChecker! The tool I used for my first solution attempt lacked precision. The tool I used for my second solution attempt lacked accuracy. After my second DNF log, cachbefound sent email offering me the source to a Mac program (based on FizzyCalc) that he had used, and we started an email conversation. He co nfirmed that his original coordinates had been almost the same as my second attempt, and forwarded a suggestion from The Rat that pointed out a way to obtain the accuracy necessary for this puzzle. Soon I had identified another tool with the necessary accuracy, and my third attempt at the coordinate s was confirmed by GeoChecker. Interestingly, my third attempt produced coordinates roughly half-way between my first and second sets of coordinates.

But having accurate coordinates is not the same as finding the cache, and tonight's search was just as fruitless as my previous two searches. I'm not sure how much more thoroughly I can search for a micro-cache at this location without becoming destructive.

Aug 25, 2008

Angular Reasoning

By: The Rat Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

Over the weekend, I found a different tool--one that provides the necessary precision. The coordinates I obtained with it were in the same general vicinity as my original coordinates, but some distance away. Tonight I dropped by after work to search for the cache, but again, I came up with nothing. Now that I'm home again, I fed my new coordinates to GeoChecker, which says they're incorrect. My original coordinates are also incorrect. Sigh... I'll be back once I have confirmed coordinates. Too bad there isn't a Mac version of FizzyCalc.

Stamp Exchange

By: E.caballus Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

The description page needs to be updated to indicate the correct size and type of container. It is no longer a Small container and it is no longer "a Rubbermaid container, about pint size". And since the cache had migrated some distance before I returned it to a location that matches the description page, it's probably a good idea for the owner to make sure it's hidden where it's supposed to be hidden.

Stamp Exchange

By: E.caballus Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

I dropped by this morning to redeem my earlier DNF. After reading the most recent logs, I expanded my search radius. I was a bit concerned to find a film canister (not "a Rubbermaid container, about pint size") located more than AB yards away (not "about AB feet away"). I rechecked the cache description, and confirmed that it did say "about AB feet" rather than "about AB yards". Then I re-hid the container in a location that matches the description page, but I'm not sure it's where the owner originally hid it. TN, L my trackable[/ur l] sig token, SL. TFTC!

Angular Reasoning

By: The Rat Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

Finding the general area was easy enough, but the tool I used lacked the precision I really needed. Still, I was able to compensate, and tonight I dropped by after work for a (fruitless) search. On my way home, I realized a mistake in the way I had compensated for my tool's imprecision. I'll be back once I rework my solution.

By: Geo Baby Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Regular

It was a beautiful summer morning for a bike ride through the baylands, and there wasn't even a hint of "Pee-You!" here. Although there was more than a hint of "Pee-You!" elsewhere along the trail, so it probably depends on the prevailing winds. Anyway, I spent far more time searching than a regular size 1.5-star hide should require, and came up with nothing.

I dropped by this morning before work. As others have mentioned, working the math was easy enough. Thanks for the checksum though: I made a classic mistake when calculating one of the digits. But when I reached GZ, I came up with nothing. Eventually I read the hint, which matched a location I had checked, but where I hadn't found anything. I assumed that it was muggled and continued on my way. However, from reading the logs, I think this may just be a bit harder to find than most 1.5-star hides.

Puzzled Park

By: eggzie Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I noticed that this one had popped up at the top of my "nearest to home" list, so I stopped by after work last night to get the necessary information for the first option. The numbers I got didn't quite work out (in writing email to the owner, I realized that I had used A=1 rather than A=0 when determining G), but I was sure enough of the answers that I dropped by this morning to make the find. Fortunately, I had the place mostly to myself both visits. The first option really feels more like an offset multi-cache than a puzzle. For the record, Mountain View parks and trails are open from 6:00 AM to one-half hour after sunset, not 24 hours. Silicon Valley Treasure Hunt

By: candcfamily 2.0 Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Yahoo! This one has been at the top of my "nearest to work" list for a couple weeks now, and I finally solved it! At first, I had no idea where to start. Watching a volleyball game didn't help at all. But eventually I stumbled upon a few pieces to the puzzle, including a key piece that put the others in context. Then I found other pieces, and started figuring out how they fit together.

I can see how treating this treasure hunt as a social activity might help, but I ended up solving most of it on my own. At one point, I did ask for help from coworkers who are quite experienced with the theme of this puzzle. While they did point me to a resource that I found somewhat useful, they couldn't actually help m e with any of the puzzle pieces I was struggling with. Later, I reported what I thought might be an error to the owner, who offered a hint that nudged me to finish the remaining pieces.

Once I had the treasure map in hand (so to speak), I decided to grab the cache ASAP. I dropped by tonight after l eaving work. There was no stash note, so I left a waterproof one. Slippery When Wet

By: The Rat Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

This one probably would have been easier for me to find without the hint. A week ago, I searched the wrong coordinates, came up with nothing, decrypted the hint, still came up with nothing, and verified my coordinates... only to discover that I had been searching at the wrong coordinates. From there, I walked to the correct coordinates, but started searching immediately where I "knew" the cache was located, based on the hint that I'd already decrypted. Except that I still wasn't looking in the right location. I emailed the owner, who verified my coordinates, but pointed out that I had misinterpreted the hint. Thus, I was focusing on where it was not, and completely ignoring where it was.

This morning, my wife was at the Cupertino Lions' annual Fish-A-Thon and I was dogsitting again, to keep her guide dog out of the pond and away from the fish. After finding or DNFing all the local puzzle caches that I had solved beforehand, I still had time to come back here to grab this one. Yep... It's much easier to find when you search where the cache is, rather than where it isn't. TNLNSL. I will keep my trackable sig token for this nano-cache moving. Slippery When Wet

This one has been on one of my "nearest to" lists for a while, but I kept trying to determine the encryption method without doing any basic analysis. Sure enough, once I decided to work at it a little, I determined the encryption method quickly. (Yes, it is a rather quirky warning, but it's also a rather quirky encryption method.) I had coordinates moments later. I was in the area this morning, so I dropped by. GZ looked unlikely, but about 50' away was one of my favorite types of hide location, and the hint fit this example nicely. But after searching for half an hour or more, I hadn't found anything.

I decided to double-check my coordinates. (Fortunatel y, I had the necessary information in my Palm.) Sure enough, I had again managed to make a mistake while converting a puzzle solution into cache coordinates. Fortunately, the corrected coordinates were within walking distance of my original coordinates. And the new location fit the hint too, althoug h in a rather different way.

But after searching for another half hour or more, I still came up with nothing. I've rechecked my corrected coordinates, and I think I was looking in the right place. I'll confirm my coordinates with the cache owner before searching again.

By: Wildbun Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

This has been on my "nearest to work" list for far too long, so I took a slight detour on the way home tonight to grab it. This was a great spot to slow down at the end of the day! TN, L my trackable sig token, SL. Thanks for showing me this peaceful place, and TFTC!

Parking in Rear

By: gdict Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

This one has been at the top of my "nearest to home" list for a while, so I dropped by on the way to work this morning. I had the place to myself, until the Foothill Disposal truck made its rounds. There was no stash note, so I left a waterproof one. I'm glad I didn't need to decrypt the hint by hand. TN, L my trackable sig token, SL. TFTC!

POP #2

By: WeBeDnD Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

After my recent DNF, I re-worked the puzzle and came up with the same solution as before. But when I checked my coordinates with the solution, I discovered some misplaced digits. Oops... Anyway, I was in the area again, so I popped by for the quick find. Yes, it's much easier with the right coordinates... TN, L my trackable sig token, SL. Thanks for the "pop" quiz, and TFTC!

Caching in a Parallel Universe

By: dgreno Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

This was my 600th find! w00t! I spend a lot of time in that parallel universe, but while the puzzle was easy for me, I was surprised to learn about something new while solving it. This morning, I was in the area for a dentist appointment, so I dropped by for the quick find on the way back to work. TN, L my trackable sig token, SL. TFTC!

Elementary-School Math - Golf Caching Diversions

By: TheDavidsons Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

This one was showing up on my "nearest to church" list, so I solved it a couple weeks ago. Once I figured out the theme, the math was easy, but tedious. After crunching out a couple sets by hand, I found a tool to do the rest. This morning I dropped by "on the way" to work. It was a beautiful day for a ride through the baylands! There was no stash note, so I left a waterproof one. POP #2

By: WeBeDnD Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I had "solved" this one some time ago, and was in the area this morning, so I dropped by. I found nothing. I thought the location I found looked like a "pop top" from the air, but now that I'm back at a computer, it doesn't look like WeBeDnD's aerial photo. I'll need to solve this one correctly before I try again...

It had been more than a month since I'd gone geocaching, but this was a beautiful sunny morning for a bike ride through the baylands before work! Rhyolitic Breccia and Banded Rhyolite

By: TerryDad2 - adopted by Mauison Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Not chosen

I came to Pinnacles National Monument for an employer-sponsored camping trip, so I suppose you could say there were a couple hundred people in my group. But AFAIK, I was the only one geocaching, and while I hiked with various coworkers over the course of the day, no one hiked the whole route with me. So I think I was a "group" of one. I started with the Split Volcano - Pinnacles NM East Earthcache after the trailhead shuttle dropped me off at the Bear Gulch Visitor Center. From there, I hiked up the Condor Gulch Trail, along the High Peaks Trail, and down th e Juniper Canyon Trail. After lunch, I continued along the Balconies Trail, through the Balconies Caves, and up the Balconies Cliffs Trail for this Earthcache (my last cache of the day). Then I hiked back down the Balconies Cliffs Trail, and back to camp via the Old Pinnacles Trail and the Bench Tra il. In 9 hours, I hiked about 12.5 miles (including about a mile of unplanned backtracking) and completed all 6 Earthcaches and the virtual cache at Pinnacles National Monument. All in all, it was an wonderful day! I'll keep my trackable sig token for this Earthc ache moving. TFTC!

But AFAIK, I was the only one geocaching, and while I hiked with various coworkers over the course of the day, no one hiked the whole route with me. So I think I was a "group" of one. I stopped for lunch near the information panels shown in the photo, but then continued along the trail to the posted coordinates. After studying the cache description again and recogizing the location in the photograph, I backtracked to the information panels. (I have included the coordinates I go t for the information panels.) After collecting the necessary information, I continued hiking along the Balconies Trail and through the Balconies Cave to the [ url=http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCPXHT]Talus Cave - Pinnacles NM Earthcache. By: Buxley Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Virtual

I came to Pinnacles National Monument for an employer-sponsored camping trip, and picked up this virtual cache towards the end of the day. I hiked through the caves first, in the downstream direction. Then I passed by the coordinates for this virtual cache on the way to the Rhyolitic Breccia and Banded Rhyolite Earthcache, which was my last cache before heading back to camp. I think it would have been more difficult to hike through the caves in the upstream direction, given that the creek flowing along the path through the cave was several inches deep in places. After a meeting at a nearby restaurant, I decided to grab a few caches on the way home this evening. I didn't plan for them all to be RG & DL caches, but it looks like it turned out that way. I found this one in the first place I looked. It seemed so obvious when I saw it there; I'm surprised it survives! There was no stash note, so I left a waterproof one. A while back, I sent the owner email. After he confirmed that a certain red herring was indeed just a red herring, I looked at the cache again and immediately had the "Aha!" moment. I was able to derive coordinates easily after that. I've got to stop overthinking these things... On Wednesday evening, I dropped by the location and decided that I shouldn't try searching there in the dark. This morning, I dropped by again to search during daylight, but I couldn't find the cache. It seems an interesting location for a cache, but I'm not sure how to search any more thoroughly for a micro without being destructive. I've sent the owner email asking for verification of my coordinates.
