Sandpipers

By: MotorBug Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

This was the third of three easy finds on a ride through the baylands this morning. This is indeed a great place for a bike ride. There were a lot of birds around this morning, although I couldn't tell a sandpiper from any of the others. TN, L seashell and niraD sig token, SL. TFTC!

This was the second of three easy finds on a ride through the baylands this morning. This is indeed a great place for a bike ride. Originally, I scrolled past the 5/28 note, and was looking for a bison tube per the 2/21 note. I found the film can (per the 5/28 note), but it wasn't really "at the base" as described. Carlos Theater

By: NavySparksandtheMrs Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

This brought back memories. I remember watching The Sound of Music in one of those big, ornate cinemas when I was a kid. As of last Mother's Day, it was still there, but it's unused and run down. There wasn't really room for my signature token in this cache, so I left it in the next cache I found. TNLNSL, TFTC!

Ashen Cache

By: Rogue Ramblers Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

It's a lot easier to find these things when you have the right coordinates. [;)] Last night I was searching in the wrong location and found an empty film canister. Before sending the owner email, I double-checked my coordinates and caught a stupid math error. Sometimes a film canister is just a film canister... This morning, I did some much-needed CITO while waiting for a nearby muggle to depart. Once I had the location to myself, I found the container quickly. But I'm still not sure I "get" the puzzle, even though I figured out the solution. TN, L niraD sig token, SL. TFTC!

I solved this one some time ago. It's outside my normal "area of operations", but one of the owner's other caches was showing up on my "nearest to home" list, and one thing led to another... Eye Cue Test

By: Rogue Ramblers Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I stumbled upon this listing after finding some of the owner's other caches, which have been on my "nearest to work" list. I enjoy wordplay and visual puns like these, so I had a solution quickly... but the checksum was wrong. [:(] I tried to figure out what I'd done wrong, but finally I gave up and emailed the owner. It turns out that I had come up with a variant answer for one of the puzzles. (I still think my answer is more appropriate than the one the owner prefers, but...) Anyway, I didn't expect to get over to the East Bay to find this one so soon, but I was able to pick it up on the way to Lake Del Valle. TN, L niraD sig token, SL. TFTC!

Buzzards Roost

Next weekend, I'm helping lead our church's canoeing and camping trip to Lake Del Valle for 3rd and 4th grade boys (and their dads). Today, I was scouting out the site, and decided to pick up a couple finds while I was at it. (I doubt I'll have time for geocaching next weekend.) I found this one lying in the open completely exposed. After signing the log, I looked around for nearby hiding places that matched the cache description and the hint. The spot I chose can't have been too bad, because KG GeoCachers and Oculus found it just fine. But there's a good chance that it's no longer where the owner originally hid it. Also, there was no stash note, so I left one.

The Old Tree

By: Silka Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.0 Container: Regular

Next weekend, I'm helping lead our church's canoeing and camping trip to Lake Del Valle for 3rd and 4th grade boys (and their dads). Today, I was scouting out the site, and decided to pick up a couple finds while I was at it. (I doubt I'll have time for geocaching next weekend.) This was an easy find at the end of the day. I spotted the cache location from a few hundred feet away. Just as I was finishing signing the log, the younger KG GeoCacher came over the hill and asked, "Are you a geocacher?" The older KG GeoCacher and Oculus followed.

As we chatted, the younger KG GeoCacher mentioned that he was disappointed not to have found the Calling Dr. Badzt Maru TB in Buzzards Roost. Screwed Up

Wow... My first find was a large cache, but at the time, I couldn't really appreciate what it takes to hide one. And this one is a puzzle cache! I can forgive a few screw-ups. Anyway, this cache has been on my "nearest to church" list for a while, but when I first saw it, I couldn't make sense of it. Now, I have experience solving quite a few other very geeky puzzle caches, and earlier this week I took another look at this one and figured out its theme. A few visits to Google, a little custom software, a lot of CPU cycles--I had the final coordinates. But there's a difference between having the final coordinates and having the cache.

For starters, I left my GPSr at home. But I remembered the locations of a couple other[/ url] caches that I had found earlier, and I was able to work out the approximate location of this one without it. But I also neglected to bring the special equipment I had used for the extreme terrain cache that I found last night. I got a little wet getting to this one, but that's okay: I needed to buy new shoes anyway.

It's a good thing I have experience with cleverly camouflaged caches. But reaching the (very appropriate) final location and finally holding the log in my hand was worth all the trouble. TN, L niraD sig token, SL. Thanks for the screwy adventure, and TFTC!

From the cache description, I had a pretty good idea how the container would be hidden and what kind of tool I'd need. This evening, I happened to have a tool which I thought would be appropriate, although it was originally designed for a rather different purpose. I dropped by after work, found the cache hidden as I expected it to be hidden, and was able to retrieve and replace the cache easily. Top of the Hill

By: Billspursuit Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

Even using my bike's granny gear, this was a long, slow climb. I saw the cache location quickly, but before I logged it, I did a little repair work on the nearby landscaping. (Several of the river rocks were clearly out of place.) I had no difficulty signing the waterproof log, but getting it out of the container was a challenge. The next finder should have an easier time of it though, since I noticed the "pull tab" and figured out how the log had been folded originally. The "pull tab" is now facing the container lid, where it can be used to retrieve the log easily.
