Ask Your Kids #2

By: UncleTom Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

Finally! Not having kids of my own to consult, I was forced to turn to the web. I now know far more about these things than I ever expected to. But once I had the answers, the real fun began: I had to convert those answers into numbers. [:O] I decided to go with the numbering system that produced correct numbers for the other AYK puzzles (which I solved before discovering there there were multiple numbering systems). Still, one of my answers was wrong (there are a lot of "correct" answers out there). But even with the incorrect digit, I was close enough to find the cache, thanks to the details in UncleTom's 11-18-2006 note. By: Rogue Ramblers Difficulty: 5.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

Based on the owner's claim (confirmed by logs from previous finders) that programming is not necessary to solve this puzzle, I decided to solve it from the information in the description, rather than by throwing CPU cycles at it. I figured out most of it (encouraged by email from the owner confirming that I was basically on the right track), but the Enigma simulator kept spewing nonsense. Then yesterday I had the "aha moment" when I realized that I had been making one invalid assumption. One little change and... numbers! I had numbers! And then I realized what that implied: The German mob may not be "all that bright", but this puzzle design is truly elegant.

I was going to post a DNF, but upon reviewing the satellite photos, it seems that I misremembered my landmarks and was searching the wrong location this morning. Sigh... But at least I got to see hundreds (!) of costumed children, parents, and teachers from the nearby school walking by on their way somewhere. A while later, I spotted them on their way back and decided it was time to leave.

Lizard Chick's Espresso Society Cache

Earlier this week, I collected the necessary information for A, B, and C, and then worked out X and Y. My checksum for Y didn't match, but the coordinates I came up with seemed very likely. I finally had the "aha moment" yesterday. I really enjoy puzzles like this, once I figure them out. SMILIE This morning, I reached GZ, looked around, and found a likely hiding spot. However, the location turned out to be incapable of holding a cache. Thinking about it, a decon container probably wouldn't have fit. Anyway, I checked the hint and found the cache shortly thereafter.

Or rather, I found th e remnants of the cache shortly thereafter. [:(] Something chewed up the decon container pretty badly. I looked around, but didn't find any of the cache contents. Sorry.

I just looked around GZ for a perfect location for a "really evil" hide, and there it was. It took me a while to realize that I needed to use my other hand to retrieve the container though. It's a lot easier to find these things when you have the right coordinates. [;)] Last night I was searching in the wrong location and found an empty film canister. Today, I was scouting out the site, and decided to pick up a couple finds while I was at it. (I doubt I'll have time for geocaching next weekend.) I found this one lying in the open completely exposed. After signing the log, I looked around for nearby hiding places that matched the cache description and the hint. The spot I chose can't have been too bad, because KG GeoCachers and Oculus found it just fine. But there's a good chance that it's no longer where the owner originally hid it. Also, there was no stash note, so I left one.

Wow... My first find was a large cache, but at the time, I couldn't really appreciate what it takes to hide one. And this one is a puzzle cache! I can forgive a few screw-ups. Anyway, this cache has been on my "nearest to church" list for a while, but when I first saw it, I couldn't make sense of it. A few visits to Google, a little custom software, a lot of CPU cycles--I had the final coordinates. But there's a difference between having the final coordinates and having the cache.

For starters, I left my GPSr at home. But I remembered the locations of a couple other[/ url] caches that I had found earlier, and I was able to work out the approximate location of this one without it. But I also neglected to bring the special equipment I had used for the extreme terrain cache that I found last night. I got a little wet getting to this one, but that's okay: I needed to buy new shoes anyway.

It's a good thing I have experience with cleverly camouflaged caches. Even using my bike's granny gear, this was a long, slow climb. I saw the cache location quickly, but before I logged it, I did a little repair work on the nearby landscaping. (Several of the river rocks were clearly out of place.) I had no difficulty signing the waterproof log, but getting it out of the container was a challenge. By: Woof! Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

This one has been on my "nearest to work" list for a while. By the time I checked the puzzle hint, I had already adopted the suggestion on my own. However, I refused to see what was obviously missing, and kept overthinking the puzzle. I got the "aha moment" last week, and made the extra drive for the cache this morning before work. A very nice location, and a quick find once the area was clear of muggles. There was no stash note, so I left one. By: mjp303 (adopted by niraD) Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Regular

Last month, I accepted mjp303's invitation to adopt this cache, which was one of the first ones I found on my own. Today, I finally replaced the missing container. I apologize for the delay; I had to switch to "Plan B" because "Plan A" required seasonal products that are no longer available locally. The new container is in the same location as the previous one, but it's larger (about 60 in³) and camouflaged. I have updated the size and difficulty accordingly. I also updated the terrain, since the location is not wheelchair accessible.

We were in Oregon visiting close friends, and I had a couple opportunities to get in a little geocaching. It's a good thing no one was around on Sunday afternoon, because I made this one much harder than it needed to be. I started by searching a more difficult area than where the cache is actually hidden. And then I discovered that my Palm computer had fallen out of my shirt pocket, so I had to search that area again. T Shop99er sig item, L skin ointment and niraD sig token, SL. TFTC!

By: trode Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Good grief! What a comedy of errors! I was working from an old copy of the cache description that didn't have the latest hints. And of course, I didn't read trode's log about adding the latest hints. And I didn't notice that my final coordinates' checksum was 64, rather than 54. I rechecked my calculations for the coordinates a couple times, but I never rechecked my calculations for the checksum.

By: trode Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I used Google to find the famous sentence (although it took a couple attempts to get the search parameters right), and an online acquaintance helped me with the famous poet. But when I ran the numbers, the checksum was wrong. So I ran the numbers again, doing it the "stupid American" way this time. The checksum was still wrong, and even further off. Back to Google: the famous poet's name was misspelled. When I ran the numbers again, the checksum matched. In the satellite photo, GZ was just barely on private property, but there was plenty of public property just across the fence. However, I didn't find anything on the public property near GZ after half an hour. Then I took a SWAG and found the container about 150 feet away from GZ. The log was soak ed, so I dried it on my car's defroster and replaced the ziplock. TN, L niraD sig token, SL. TFTC!

GeoDice

By: mrZ Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

[This one brought back memories. Back in college, a friend kept half a dozen of us up into the wee hours of the night rolling dice and asking us questions.] How many roses? How many petals? How many stems? How many leaves? How many caterpillars? How many roots? [I enjoy parlor games like this, and I've learned several more since then: Snaps, Crossed or Uncrossed, The Good Book, Aunt Emma, Aunt Susan, Bang Bang, I'm Going on a Trip, etc., etc., etc. Anyway, given what I remembered from my college experience, I figured out cachers and muggles quickly, and it didn't take me too long to figure out caches. After finding the cache on the other side of the lagoon so quickly, it figures that this one would take me a while. I searched around GZ and didn't find it. I started picking up trash, which included a pill bottle (not covered with green tape though), a small ziplock, and a couple tiny ziplocks, and I grew concerned. After a while, I read the hint, which took me to a couple spots that were 40-50 feet away, but I didn't find it there either. There was more trash over by GZ though, so I went back there. Finally, after several trips to the nearby garbage can, I found the cache. Whew... The construction of the container seems a bit inconsistent with the way it's hidden, but I suppose that could be because it's a replacement container. I rode my bicycle, and it was a short detour on the way from one cache to another, so it took no more than a few minutes extra time to get here. The ziplock bag was torn, so I replaced it. The log and replacement log are almost full, and will need to be replaced soon. T beetle, L seashell and niradw sig tokens for this cache and for the previous cache I found (a nano cache without room for sig tokens), SL. Very nicely done! This is not your everyday nano cache! Part of the log tore off while I was putting it back in the container, but batecher's FTF log is still intact. I suppose it fits a bit easier in the container now. My wife and I drove down to Salinas for Mother's Day, and went for a walk around the downtown area with my mom after dinner. Ode To Gilligan

By: stbk Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale A tale of a caching spree That started with a multi-cache And a puzzle/mystery (a puzzle/mystery) The third cache was traditional
An ode its owner wrote
To a silly 60s TV show
and a badly damaged boat (a badly damaged boat)

I pedaled down the creekside trail
And reached the Minnow's spot
I picked up lots of litter there
The container I found not (container I found not)

The sun had set, I had to go
I'd log a frownie face
But then I took one final guess
And found the hiding place (and found the hiding place)

I took a nickle, signed the log
I left a small seashell
Ten Euro cents and a sig token
And then I said "farewell" (and then I said "farewell")

I packed my stuff, switched on my lig hts
And pedaled down the road
My caching spree had ended here
Here at Gilligan's Ode!

[I left a niradw sig token, since I haven't made niraD sig tokens yet. The "not much nearby trash" line is a little more accurate now. TFTC!]

I solved this sometime last week. I stared at it online for a while, and finally decided to print it out so I could work on it on Caltrain. The next morning, on my way to work, I figured it out right away. So I worked on some other puzzles until we reached my station... Wow... I can't believe how long it took me to get the correct coordinates for this cache. My confusion started with a Graffiti error on my Palm and an arithmetic error. After finding the cache, I decrypted the hint and had to think a bit to figure out how you intended it. I'm not sure how helpful it would be to someone who hasn't found the cache yet. How Old is Mrs. Gooby?

By: UncleTom Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I've been working on the puzzle in bits and pieces for a week or two, and finished it last weekend. I dropped by last night, but the location I got from the coordinates seemed odd, and I didn't find anything as I expanded my search radius. Email from UncleTom confirmed that I had the right coordinates, and I found it quickly this morning. It turns out that I just needed to expand my search radius by a few more feet. I almost missed finding the replacement container this morning. I hadn't read the reactivation notice, and dropped by on the off chance that it had been replaced since I last checked my email. I didn't see anything where I expected the previous container to have been, and was about to leave. Then, almost as an afterthought, I decided to look around a bit more. I found the replacement container quickly. Again, I really like this puzzle. TN, L sig token, SL. TFTC!

A couple days after my previous DNF, I dropped by again and found the clues very quickly. I really like this puzzle. (Knowing that there is a checksum was critical, although the checksum itself is hardly needed.) This morning I searched the location indicated pretty thoroughly and came up with nothing. Then I expanded my search radius and looked in places where I would expect a micro, and still came up with nothing. I'll be back to find this one.

The Source

April 4, 2006. 9:15 pm. Mountain View. It was a dark and stormy night. I answered a knock at the door. She begged for help. "Yeah? What kind of help?"

She told an implausible sob story about her mansion being robbed. Frankly, I didn't think she'd seen a bed in years, let alone the inside of a mansion.

"I'll let you know if I find anything."

Did I find anything? You bet I found something! But just between you and me, the credit goes to The Source. Sure, he's unreliable--he didn't help a bit in a recent kidnapping case--but when he does come through, he's good as gold.

Evil Empire

By: Stiv Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Regular

This was supposed to be a quick find after work, but just as I was getting ready to return the ziplock bag to the camouflage container, a security truck drove up and parked on the other side of the car next to mine. The guard and another person started working on the car next to mine. I waited as long as I could, but I had to leave before they finished working on the car. So I drove off with the ziplock bag and cache contents... Which is just as well, I suppose. The seal was trashed on the ziplock bag, and the "You found it!" page was a mess. (Page protectors don't keep out the water.) Since I had had everything with me anyway, I let the cache contents dry out, replaced the "You found it!" page, and put everything in new ziplock freezer bags. Later that night I returned it to the camouflage container.

I had been searching the whole bridge, but was focusing on the wrong end. (FWIW, the coordinates posted by catomcat were spot on for me.) Actually finding this cache was rather anticlimactic. I had searched for hours when it wasn't there to be found, building a mental image of an incredibly devious hide, more devious than any of the unused hide locations I had discovered. By: Marky & Joani Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Regular

I was originally planning to look for GCK3Q8, but decided to pick up this one instead. Retrieving it was easy. Then I had to wait out numerous muggles before I could return it. T Rocket Girl 2006 token (#025), L Steve Martin Button (#265) and sig token, SL. TFTC!

Rengstorff Park # 2.5

By: MotorBug Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

The recent storms brought down a couple of the nearby bottle-brush trees right on top of ground zero. I decided to pick up GCK21G rather than search for this one.

Just a little wooden bridge.

By: nlrw Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

It was a dark and stormy night... On the plus side, there were no muggles. On the minus side, the last few feet were wet, muddy, and slippery. I managed to stay clean while looking for the cache, but once I found it...

I really should have come back later, but [insert generic rationalization here]. T music note pin, L frog and s ig token, SL. TFTC.

Hit the Target

By: Alamogul Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Okay, so Dennis the Menace was nowhere near the mark when I posted my DNF log. And I had no idea where Batman's mark needed to be. Then I experienced the "aha moment" (which seemed more like an "ARRGH! moment" at the time), and unlike Dennis the Menace and Batman, I was able to hit the bulls-eye easily. T Steve Martin Button #265, L dragonfly and sig tokens (one for this cache, and one for the previous cache I found, since it was a nano cache without enough room for a sig token), SL. Hit the Target

By: Alamogul Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I worked the obvious "solution" and thought to myself that surely it can't be that simple. So I grabbed the red herring and realized that it isn't that simple. So now I think I've got Dennis the Menace on the mark, in which case I know roughly where Batman's mark needs to be. I'll wait for the "aha moment" before I look for the cache, though.

Don't Feed the Ducks

By: geekster Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

The original log and "You found it" note were wet, so I dried them out in the sun while enjoying the beautiful location. I also replaced the ziploc bag. The container lid will stay on if the container is replaced carefully, but the cache has seen better days. TN, L sig token, SL. TFTC!

Zeno's Paradox

By: Chris & Janet Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

It was an interesting puzzle. After a couple brute-force attempts, I understood it well enough to work it out methodically. The container isn't waterproof and the log has been wet (although it's currently dry), but it looks like some of the signatures have been typed over, so I guess you know that. I put my sig token for this cache in the next cache I found, since there wasn't enough room for it in this nano cache. TNLNSL. I drove by this afternoon (after logging another DNF for GCJG8G), and there was the tool, plain as day, right where I had been looking for it Monday night. I have no idea why I couldn't find it then.

Tube It!

By: 3BBoys Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

[This is a very clever cache. I can assure cachecrashers that it was not muggled during the recent tree trimming. And I can assure ProTechCC that the cache should be visible from the posted coordinates. TN, L sig token, SL. Thank you very much for this cache!] My original log included "more accurate" coordinates for the cache. Then I read the other logs, realized that the posted coordinates are absolutely correct, and deleted my original log.

In hindsight, I realize that I went to the correct location and looked at exactly the right spot. I just wish I had looked long enough to see the cache as the owner originally intended. Instead, I expanded my search radius.

Note that this stretches the definition of a traditional cache. Compare this one with Mayfield Puzzle (GCKQCN), which is listed as a puzzle cache.

Almost Natural

By: Rocket Girl and DuckeyLee Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Small

Nice camouflage. It would be easier to replace the lid if you trimmed some of the camouflage material that extends to the "inside" side of the lid. And I'm not sure why you asked us to leave the container where it was. Anyway, this was an easy find, which I appreciate after spending time looking for GCJG8G. Tree Puzzle

By: Sierra Hikers Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Another quick find in the area around my office. I didn't leave the container anchored where it was because its contents were stuck, and I pulled it loose trying to shake them free. I think I resecured it properly, but it would be nice if it had a simple way to be removed and resecured easily. It turned out that a coin from New Zealand just barely fit in the container, and was blocking everything from coming out. My wife and I frequently ride past this location on our tandem. Anyway, I found the cache right away. I looked for the tool, but didn't find it (even with the hint). I decided to leave the sig token for a nano cache (a micro cache like this one that is just large enough for the log, with no room for tokens, coins, etc.) in the next cache that I find.
